Detox to Retox: The Close Ties Between Exercise and Beer

Here at higherpower, we love the social aspect of exercise. Sometimes that means meeting up after a  run or cycling session for a drink. Happy's Running Club is a great example of how we can make friends through exercise that form relationships on and off the running trail.  For many people, working out and alcohol are closely linked. Sports teams and training partners celebrate victories or mark the end of training sessions with a beer or three. Beer, in fact, provides a substantial portion of some exercisers’ fluid intake after workouts.

But whether exercise encourages people to drink and, likewise, whether drinking encourages people to exercise has been in dispute. The New York Times published an article today showing the science behind exercise and drinking as our favorite past time.

Two new studies suggest that exercise may well influence when and how much people drink. Drinking may even affect whether people exercise, and, the findings suggest, the interplay between exercise and alcohol could be a good thing.

In the review, published in Frontiers in Psychiatry, the authors point out that in lab rodents, both exercise and alcohol have been shown to increase activity in parts of the brain related to reward processing. The animals seem, in animal fashion, to get a kick out of both exercise and drinking.  But while the animals’ brains responded similarly to the two activities, they did not respond identically, the past studies show. But while the available evidence suggests that exercise may encourage people to drink, it does not indicate that this relationship is necessarily worrisome for the vast majority of us. 

Here in New Orleans we're committed to staying fit but it's good to know the occasional Barathon or post race drink is just part of our balanced lifestyle.

There's no secret to leading a fit, healthy life. It's all about hard work and sweat. 

Here's four amazing reasons to add that yoga and cycling to your daily routine. According to LifeHack, here's a few benefits of sweat for your health.

1.  Amazing benefit of toxin release

What exactly happens when we sweat it out?  It’s true…we literally release toxins from our system using sweat as the conduit.  Experts agree that we mainly release excess salt, cholesterol and alcohol. Which means that a sweaty work-out will de-bloat us, clean our clogged arteries and help with a hang-over?

2.  Sweating as an antibiotic

Halloween Tricks for Too Many Treats


Here at higherpower we love Reese's peanut butter cups! Everyone has their favorite kind of Halloween candy but it's easy to overdo the amount of sweets you eat.

Sure your cycling and yoga habits help with the indulgences but here's a few more tips for staying on track while the candy is 'staring you in the face.'

1. Skip the value packs. Limit the amount of candy you bring into the house by avoiding the giant bags of candy sold in stores. 
2. Spend a little more for better quality treats that you can savor. Dark chocolate is a great choice! Remember to look for 60% or greater cacao content. 
3. When a craving hits indulge in fun non-food treats like chocolate flavored lip balm. Our favorite is Burts Bees Blueberry and Dark Chocolate lip balm.

Shower Your Muscles With Water

Winter is quickly approaching and as the temperature decreases our bodies need for fluids increases. On average our lungs expel between 2-4 cups through normal breathing, but during cold months their work is kicked up a notch. Add cold weather with a hour spin class and your body is begging for the hydration. Dehydration occurs with a loss of 10% of water but negative effects to athletic performance and mental clarity can start as soon as a 2% loss. Your water bottle is the best workout buddy! The benefits don’t stop at your mat, hydration helps circulation, transportation of nutrients and can even prevent getting the unwanted winter cold.

A great way to keep yourself on track is to take your body weight and put an “oz” behind it, that is your goal. If you weigh 140 lbs, set out to drink 140 ozs of water a day, which is about 8 small water bottles. Always keep that bottle close so you can react to the initial warning sign...thirst.

Q: What is TRX? Where did it start? 

A: Randy Hetrick, a former Navy Seal and Stanford MBA graduate, developed the Total Resistance eXercise (TRX) equipment in the 1990's and started marketing it in 2005.

Q: Suspension training? What is that?
A: Suspension training is an approach to strength training that uses a system of ropes and webbing called a "suspension trainer" to allow the user to work against his own body weight. Suspension training develops physical strength while using functional movements and dynamic positions.

Q: What is the workout like?
A: The workout is similar to a simple version of reformer Pilates or antigravity yoga, TRX offers a total-body workout, centered on your core and relying on your body weight.
Q: What can I expect in the gym?
A: Expect an individualized and amazing workout. The exercises can easily be adapted to your fitness level. Be prepared to start slow, as little by little you can train up to the full position. Breathe through the movement, and always listen to your body.

1 cup fresh or frozen pineapple, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1/2 cup low-fat plain Greek yogurt
1 cup pineapple juice
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup ice (if using fresh pineapple)
1/8 teaspoon stevia or sweetener (optional)
Squeeze of fresh lime juice (optional)

Blend pineapple, ginger, yogurt, pineapple juice, cinnamon, and ice (if using fresh pineapple).
