About Girls Interrupted:
Girls Interrupted was started by Rachel Eustis (Previvor) and Heather Hays (Survivor) and together their hope is to bring awareness and raise money for this insidious disease. The name "Girls Interrupted" is what Rachel's surgeon called her during her recovery from her prophylactic double mastectomy for the BRCA1 gene mutation. Heather too had a double mastectomy for DCIS. They were blessed to only have our lives interrupted, some lose their fight and they want to honor them. Anyone facing breast cancer or who has the breast cancer gene is a girl interrupted.
This year, Girls Interrupted chose to to spotlight American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge in New Orleans. Facing cancer is hard. Having to travel out of town for treatment can make it even harder. Yet the American Cancer Society has a place where cancer patients and their caregivers can find help and hope when home is far away - New Orleans Hope Lodge.
Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their caregivers a free place to stay when their best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Not having to worry about where to stay or how to pay for lodging allows guests to focus on getting better. Hope Lodge provides a nurturing, home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Every Hope Lodge also offers a variety of resources and information about cancer and how best to fight the disease or while recovering from an invasive surgery.
Thank you for allowing Girls Interrupted to greater help the Hope Lodge. We can do greater things when we work together as a community.
